To the average person, it’s easy to assume CBD would make you sleepy, especially if you’re familiar with the powerful sedative effects of using marijuana or THC.

After all, how could CBD help alleviate sleeping disorders like insomnia without making the user sleepy?

Keep reading to discover the answer and learn some surprising facts about CBD that you may have never known.

Let’s dive in!

What Is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol), is one of over 60 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including THC, the cannabinoid responsible for delivering the psychoactive effect associated with getting high. While the two cannabinoids share many similarities, one of the distinct differences between CBD and THC is that CBD does not get you high. Because of this, CBD has opened the door to the many medical applications of the Cannabis plant.

How Does CBD Work?

Once administered, CBD enters the body where it then interacts with a network of receptors located throughout our body. This network is known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) because these receptors are known to only interact with cannabinoids such as CBD.

The human body is self-adjusting, constantly shifting to keep balanced and healthy – a process called homeostasis. Our body system’s primary job is to maintain homeostasis and help the body adapt to outside stressors.

One way our bodies maintain homeostasis is via the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Marijuana and CBD work by acting on the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The ECS is a network of cell receptors (CB1 & CB2) spread throughout the entire body that controls some of our most vital life functions including eating, sleeping, relaxation and cognition.

The ECS also assists in the body’s overall recovery and repair. It’s like your body’s “master control.” CB1 receptors are found mainly in the brain and spinal cord, while CB2 receptors are concentrated in immune cells in the peripheral nervous system.

Our bodies naturally produce compounds called endocannabinoids (endo=inside) that bind to those receptors, like a key fitting into a lock. CBD hemp oil is a plant-based cannabinoid – or phytocannabinoid (phyto=plant) – that similarly acts upon cell receptors to help activate the ECS.

Does CBD Make You Sleepy?

Ironically, it does not!

While CBD has demonstrated to be viable in easing the side effects of insomnia, how it attempts to do so might not be the same as you envisioned.

Rather than controlling narcotic impacts like THC or resting pills, CBD battles insomnia at the source.

CBD is totally extraordinary!

Recall when we discussed the ECS right? Well, majority of the receptors in the ECS are concentrated in the brain and the central nervous system.

Studies demonstrate that when CBD collaborates with these receptors, intellectual capacities improve and the cerebrum can react to upsetting circumstances all the more adequately. Accordingly, the negative social yield is relieved and the stress cycle is nullified.

By improving the mind’s ability to react to unpleasant circumstances, CBD mitigates current feelings of anxiety, while filling in as a safeguard measure against future stress.
